Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
